Just the kind of money management our country needs.

It's amazing that she can be labeled a conservative. Since when do conservatives raise corporate taxes the way Palin did with her "Alaska's Clear and Equitable Share" windfall profits tax?
- 3 votes
Imagine the damage she could do with the national treasury.

Standard operating procedure for the GOP. Reagan did it. Dubya did it. And if they're elected Johnny Boy and his new girlfriend will drive us deeper in debt too. The idea that the GOP is the party of fiscal responsibility is the biggest lie and the worst joke they done to our country.

Dubya, Palin: When you find yourself in a hole, the best thing to do is STOP DIGGING.
Let them get into Office so we have another thing to add to the running list of Dumb Presidents.

"Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a 'fiscal conservative.' During her 6 years as mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33 percent."
According to figures provided by the city of Wasilla, the operating budget for Wasilla went from $6,050,160 in fiscal year 1996 to $9,393,768 in 2002. That's a 55 percent increase. But adjusted for inflation, it's a 35 percent increase.

From what I read, she took on debt for some construction projects, and raised city tax by half a % or so to cover it.
Now tell me for example, do you build a house with no debt???
Right, because they needed a $14.5 million sports complex built on land they didn't even have a title to, which cost them an extra $1.5 million in legal fees to obtain. That's why they had to raise the taxes.

Actually all they did was start inroads and utilities on the property before the title was cleared.
Sarah Palin built the city's first big sports complex, on time, under budget, and the bond will be paid off two years ahead of schedule.
Much like New York now has a new stadium for the Yankees, Sarah Palin pushed through a much needed sports complex to improve the lives of the people of Wasilla.
Nearing the end of its first full year of operation, the Wasilla Multi-Use Sports Complex is boasting 20 to 50 percent increases in off-ice uses offered at the 102,000 square-foot facility.[4]
Wasilla voters agreed in 2002 to a half-percent increase in the city sales tax to pay off a $14.7 million bond to build the multi-use facility. The project "was completed on schedule and under budget," Mayor Dianne Keller said, and the complex opened its doors March 6, 2004. Sales tax revenue, which can only be used to pay the bond, is coming in faster than expected. Keller said she believes the facility will be paid off at least two years ahead of the 10-year schedule.
Seriously, if a small town mayor's building project budget is the biggest attack point you guys have on Palin, we're looking reeeeally good for November!
Funny that the hockey mom builds a hockey arena with other people's money. I think she fits right in with the GOP ticket. Typical borrow and spend liberal pretending to be a conservative, just geedubya and friends.

22m in debt for a village of 5000. That's amazingly @!$%#ing large.

Hey NeoCon Ron you are usually pretty strong about defending conservatives would you be willing to fill me in on the question I was asking below. I am not looking for a rude argument just a serious explanation.

It's pretty large for a "fiscal conservative" who started with zero debt. Canceling property taxes (benefitting wealthier home-owners) and implementing sales taxes of just about everything is incredibly regressive. It might make sense in a tourist region, not a bedroom community. Such a policy encourages tax flight for those who can travel elsewhere to do their shopping, leaving the poor, senior citizens, stay-at-home moms stuck footing the bill.
Looks like Bush-o-nomics written small.

Which means she borrowed $3283 per person, and left them to pay it off. Sounds like the standard deal for the current crop of "conservatives". They should be publicly flogged for calling themselves conservatives.

I have a serious question for conservatives and/or independants who support Palin. Is the attraction to her simply her social conservative stand or do you still see her as a fiscal conservative despite some of the news that has broken concerning some of her policies. For example she uses the same wind fall tax that Obama proposes. I guess what I am asking is this: is the attraction to the McCain Palin ticket Senator McCain fiscal conservatives stand and Sarah Palin's social conservative stand. Or do you believe that Palin is really both fiscally and socially conservative. I mean I can see her as socially conservative but I just don't see her as fiscally conservative with all the news that is coming out. And no I am not trying to be funny I am trying to really understand this. So please help me to get this one.

Honestly, I find her mainly to be social conservative more than anything. If another republican was running for President I would vote for them over McCain any day. I respect McCains experience and military service, but I think we could of had a better choice like .. Tom Coburn for instance. Now the reason why I am voting McCain instead of Barrack is because I feel the Democratic Congress has failed us in every aspect and I don't see Obama making any changes to that.

Hey NeoCon Ron :)
Thanks for the answer too, I had the same question. If I may ask a follow up.....
The Democrats have had a slight majority for the past two years, yet it was the Repubs in charge of the Congress for at least the 6 years before that, and the Repubs had the White House, too. How does that factor into your reasoning that you wont vote a Dem into the White House because the Dem Congress failed us?
(I too have been disappointed by the Dem Congress, but I do concede that they DONT have veto over riding power, and that the Repubs where in FULL before that and their actions are why I wont vote Repub again)......

I know we can both agree the economy has not been too good since the war in Iraq, but since the Democrats have taken congress in January 2007 you can see a degrade in the economy ,the housing distaster, and gas prices have become a bigger issue. I mean come on now while our nation has to spend hundreds of dollars a month on gas they sit there and go on vacation for 5 weeks and they still have yet to do anything about the energy crisis.
See article for better details. I'm too tired to type :) www.heritage._org/research/budget/bg2081.cfm (take the _— out at ._org)
I agree that Bush should of used his veto power, but he failed in that. That is no surpise to me. Now I vote for McCain / Palin because I think they will beable to reform and bring the Republicans back into congress in hopes of saving us from this economic disaster just like the republican congress had achieved under Clinton beginning in 1994 after the housing scandals.

The Democrats took over congress in 2006, but the they can't do squat with barely a majority and Bush threatening to veto everything. A republican president and a democratic house just means status quo.

Ok, where to start.........let's see, war in Iraq, yep the Dem congress started that. The housing disaster, that was caused by totally irresponsible lending practices that Mr. Bush pushed on the Fed, but what the heck, we can blame that on the Dem congress too, since the chickens came home to roost after they were voted in, that works. Gas prices, it's just a coincidence that an oil boy was in office while they went from $1 a gallon in 2001 to $4+ dollars a gallon.
Good luck with the reform thing. I'm assuming you also believe in the tooth fairy and the easter bunny?

I think the conservatives just like her because she's not Mccain and they really can't stand him. They just want someone to cheer for and they can't really find that in Mccain.
- 6 votes
See and that is what is bugging me. If Republicans can't stand him how come they elected him. Did they hold their nose and vote for him because they knew their brand had got tainted by Bush and they figured he was the most moderate, or was it that he was just the best out of the other options. For example why not Huckabee, Palin holds a lot of the same views as Huckabee?

Sarah P is also the religious right's first stealth candidate to hit the big time. They've had a program underway for over a decade now to take over school boards, town councils, etc with True Believers, then move them up the electoral scale. (Virtually any small town in America can point to these; the state of Kansas school board was the previous high-water mark.) All quite legal, but also quite scary as the aims aren't necessarily in the interest of upholding the Constitution.
Thus the outpouring of affection and the willingness to overlook damn near anything questionable in her background so long as she continues to mouth the party line on abortion, evolution, global warming... the whole gamut of anti-progressive issues.

She is a religious nut and they've had far too much influence on OUR government.

If they think McCain will let her have any input in his Presidency, they are sadly delusional. She is his ticket to the Oval Office, he is using her, and once there, he will treat her the way JFK treated Johnson, like a second class citizen. I have to admit, he is doing a pretty good job at hiding his jealousy. Must really suck to be the one running for the Presidency and they want her, not him.

Isabella- You bring up an interesting point here. I could see how it would be true. After all, she has no experience in the Senate. He could totally steamroll her during his Presidency.

Oh and as far as the article goes, this lady ain't no fiscal conservative this is painfully obvious. She needs to stop pretending like she is. I would have more respect for her if she promoted herself as a social conservative only. By presenting herself as a fiscal conservative it makes her look completely dishonest.

A little bird told me that hockey moms are not fiscally conservative. I did not care about the facts then, I just keep repeating what the bird told me, and it became TRUE! It works, Rove, your methods are effective! Of course, later on I found that the facts would have told me the same thing, so all that meditation and repetition was quite a waste of time.

Maybe we should be scrutinizing the personal finances of these candidates in detail. They say that the way a person manages their own personal finances can be a good indicator of the way they will manage government finances, and so on. In this case, the way she has managed a city budget is probably a good indicator of how she would participate in managing the federal budget as VP. Several municipalities across America have been stealthily trying to pad the pockets of the rich by letting them build sports complexes, and vote in half percent tax increases to "fund" these. I think it's a typical scam against the taxpayers that's been aided and abetted by city officials (for who knows what payoff?). Do we really want this on a national level?
- 3 votes
I just wish someone in the Dem party would take the responsibility of responding to the McCain/Palin attacks and the continued coverage of garbage politics, by the pundits, and the media and handle it like the nonsense that it is, so that WE ALL can get onto the issues.
If people really think this kind of "Maverick" nickname,McCain calls himself, and frankly prides himself on is a good thing.......they will be sorry to know that in this case maverick is not meant in the kindest way. He's known as an ass in the Senate, uncooperative, nasty, and contemptuous. He has a well known temper, this is verifiable. John is called that because he's a joke. And the Obama folk need to stay on that. Obama himself needs to be free to do what he does best.....bring hope and vision and passion to a weary people.
I just want to hear "the plans" that each candidate offers considering I only have 50 some odd days to reveiw and know them and make up my mind. Does that matter to anyone? WE NEED TO HEAR YOUR ACTUAL POINTS ON KEY ISSUES....not their version of the political 'TMZ'.

I'm not a McCain/Palin supporter but I just want to show that the same story can be spun two ways:
22 million in debt means that she DID SOMETHING while mayor like building something the city needed. City and State governments often issue municipal bonds to fund projects. It's completely normal. You should judge her based on what she did with that money.
A town with a population of 5000 needed a 15 million dollar sports center built on land it didn't even own?
- 4 votes
ok so i just read the article. She built a sport complex and repaired roads. Also the city grew and earned more revenue. Sounds like success to me. If you make the city more attractive to live in by building things like this, then its money well spent.
What most are misinformed about is Wasilla is the main hub in the Mat-Su Borough. Yes the city has only about 6500 people but it serves about 80,000 people that live around it. The Borough is about the size of New Jersey! The Borough citizens use the city for most of their shoppping and a lot work in the city. The Sports Complex was voted on by the citizens of Wasilla and is being paid for by a 1/2% (half a cent) sales tax. There was a 2% tax innitiated a couple of years earlier to pay for the police department. The state of Alaska has no tax. Now i want to know how many of you Palin bashers live in a city and or state with only a 2 1/2 percent sales tax and have police, fire protection, garbage collection, city water, city sewer, snow removal, and paved roads to drive on? Get your facts right!
the reason for the low tax, etc is NOT a fiscally conservative Palin, it is the revenue from oil that the state gets a share of. Can someone give me a link to the oil companies related stuff that Palin did? She says she went against big oil, more details would help, that would possibly be the one positive about her as far as I am concerned. Did she do this by means of a windfall profit tax similar to what Obama has suggested? But are the Republicans not totally against that?

You people take the views of one person in an email full of half truths and bad statistics as gospel. Especially someone with a cross to burn. My God Scotty Beam Me Up. There is no intelligent life here!
In any society you cannot have a services infrastructure without spending money. The only monetary income for a city is a viable tax base (unless the city owns a casino.) Everyone is perplexed about this sports complex. It is not only a sports complex it doubles as a convention and meeting hall. Up until it was built the largest hall in town was at the VFW (about 100 seating). It isn't a free complex, people pay to use it which in turn is income for the city. Half the city streets were still gravel when this complex was started. The tax and the loan paid for these services to be upgraded. Ms KilKinney said there was no sewer treatment plant until Sara got in office, that is not true! There is a plant that has been in operation since the 80's. The problem was the previous administrations & City Engineers designed it so poorly that it never worked properly. The previous administration even sued the construction company and their Engineering company for the debacle. The city lost!! With the tax/loan structure the sewer and public water supplies have been upgraded and improved. Wasilla is a small town and with that you get a large amount of petty personal badmouthing. Get the facts first!!
Krissa,
Go to www.alaska.gov and look for the legislation passed. I think that is correct? Palin and the state legislature were working on a oil tax structure before Obama got on his soapbox. That is what got three of Alaska legislatures in the jailhouse and a couple more are still under investigation. Taking bribes from oil lobbyist. When Palin got word of the skullduggery she set the hounds loose on them. Palin has always been a social conservative as well as a fiscal conservative in my view. She wants the best for the people at the same time doing the job for the least amount of money.
But Kilkenny's numbers are mostly accurate, so we rule her statements about Wasilla's finances under Palin Mostly True

I have a problem with the entire trickle down economic theory. If you take it to its logical conclusion, money keeps getting concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer people (just keep taxing the average American more, and borrowing more, in order to cut taxes for the extremely wealthy). The current administration has probably engineered the largest transfer of wealth in the history of the world by doing this. Pretty soon one person will have nearly all the money, and will "trickle" down a little to his friends and cronies. This sounds to me alot like feudal England, where the King had everything, gave out money and property to the Lords, and everyone else were peasants that had nothing.
Our society implemented a progressive tax system for this very reason, to maintain a large educated middle class so this type of repressive feudal system wouldn't happen to us. Besides, the rich do benefit from having an economically stable society, where middle class families can actually afford things (creates demand). Everyone benefits, when there is a balance of demand and supply. They should call it demand and supply side economics.
Unfortunately, Republicans have chosen to only support this trickle down economic theory and try to destroy the demand side of the equation. Now you know why I can't in all good conscience vote for McCain/Palin because I have little doubt they will continue this insane and unfair economic policy that is bringing this country down.

During that same time frame of Palin's Mayoral reign, the town of Wasilla received $27 Million from the Government.
Palin knew how to bring home Da Bacon from the Government way back.
691 total votes got her elected in that town of 5700(1996).
